Why choose a Wired Network.

Wired LAN or WAN networks offer additional speed reliability and security over wireless networks. They are still used to link two or more computers but this time wires are used in stead of radio waves. The speed, security and reliability of a wired networks are in some cases worth the additional work required in tracing out network cables.

Modern Networks can run at blistering speeds up to a gigabyte - that's fast, but the most common network in place is either the old standard of 10 megabytes per second or more recently 100 megabytes per second. For most people 100 mps (megabytes per  second)  is more than adequate for their needs.

Networks are configured using a PC, Server or Router to control the communication between devices. In the home or small business it is now common place to let the router handle this part of the process as modern routers come with built in tools which allocate (DHCP) addresses (IP/TCP) to each machine. They also resolve issues and allow you too look up other machines via a name e.g (Main_PC) rather than numbers (DNS).

Wired networks are still common place and will remain so for some time. However with the advancement of wireless networks many people choose this option due to the ease of installation and reduction in cables.

Both types of network have their place and at Ellison we are more than happy to discuss this with you and give you solid unbiased advice.

Security

It must be remembered that for home users, security levels for wired networks are less vigorous than for a business and therefore not all steps are required.

  1. MAC Control: only allow devices with known MAC addresses to connect
  2. DHCP: If practical turn off DHCP and use static IP addresses
  3. Enable Firewall Settings on router if provided
  4. Firewall Individual devices within the LAN as we as the router firewall
